The thing about cubism is that no one really knows just what it means, or even how to use the word, and then we all go and use it anyway.

Like many other terms used to describe artistic movements -- "baroque," "rococo," "impressionism" -- the first time it was used, in 1908, it was meant as an insult. A critic said that one of Picasso's gang made pictures that looked like a pile of cubes -- and what could be dumber than that?
