National United Way Clamps Down on Pension Rules

The United Way of America has changed its pension plan to prohibit lump-sum payments and tighten eligibility requirements after paying $1.5 million to a former chief executive who served less than four years in the job, United Way officials said yesterday.

The payment to Betty Stanley Beene, who led the Alexandria-based national organization from late 1997 to 2001, was disclosed in recent United Way tax filings.

Yesterday, current chief executive Brian A. Gallagher defended the payment as appropriate. He said it was based on Beene's salary and years of service in the United Way system -- ...
