Banker John E. Sumter Jr., 86, Dies

John E. Sumter Jr., 86, who retired from American Security Bank in 1982 as vice chairman of the board, died of cancer July 14 at his home in the Leisure World community in Silver Spring.

Mr. Sumter began at the bank as a runner in 1945 and became a bookkeeper and teller. He went on to head the trust and tax departments and was vice president of major corporate accounts.

After he retired, he was a consultant to Riggs Bank and acted as liquidation conservator for First Maryland Savings and Loan of Silver Spring. He also was the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corp. representative for First ...
