Donald Justice has an exacting imagination. He is a precisionist
of loss, a meticulous craftsman forever thinking about the past,
about vanishing American scenes and landscapes. He was born in Miami,
Fla., in 1925, and writes beautifully about his native realm,
summoning up luminous details from his childhood in the 1930s (one of
his improvisatory poems is called "The Miami of Other Days"), evoking
Depression-era America with scrupulous accuracy (another is termed
"Cinema and Ballad of the Great Depression").
