Beloved for its award-winning service and homey touches such as the chocolate chip cookies that are baked onboard, Midwest Airlines wants to remain Milwaukee's hometown airline.

But the decision on whether Midwest is bought by discount carrier AirTran Airways likely rests with a small group that focuses on dollars and cents, not sentiments. Midwest's institutional investors could force the company's board to reconsider AirTran's $290 million takeover bid.
