Surviving 16 years in the grim student "re-education"prison of
Pitesti during the excesses of Stalinist and post-Stalinist Romania -
when thousands of fellow prisoners perished - turned a young student
into a future priest. Gheorghe Calciu-Dumitreasa had begun medical
studies in the fateful year of 1946 as Communist terror was stepping
up and in 1948 he was arrested. Emerging only in 1964, he resolved
to train as a priest "out of gratitude to God" for his preservation.
