Widow seeks $1.3 million in tow-plane pilot's death Suit says cadets at academy improperly maneuvered glider

The widow of a tow plane pilot killed in a crash at the Air Force Academy is seeking $1.3 million in a wrongful-death lawsuit against the federal government.

The suit, filed Tuesday in federal court, alleges that two cadets on a training flight improperly maneuvered their TG-4 glider, causing the Piper Cub tow plane piloted by retired Air Force Lt. Col. Paul Vogel to crash on academy grounds.

Vogel, a 72-year-old decorated fighter pilot, died in the April 26, 2002, crash. The two cadets landed the glider safely after the tow rope broke.
