Cultures collide inside one man Review: Historians delve into mind of George Bent

Children of southern Colorado tour Bent's Old Fort, the reconstructed trading post near La Junta, on school field trips and family vacations. But what do they -- or any of us -- know of the people behind that name?

The man who built the original fort, William Bent, was born in St. Louis in 1809. At 17, he followed his brothers west to become a fur trapper.

After surviving Indian attacks and an arduous winter, William and Charles Bent made a pact with the Cheyennes and began building a trading post in 1832. William soon earned the trust of tribal leaders.
