DENVER - The cell phone could be replacing the smoke-filled room of politics.

It's hard not to reach that conclusion with the way both parties are handling the drive for Colorado's open U.S. Senate seat -- working the phones to line up candidates and dialing to keep out others.

"What is really happening is that one of the great reforms of the 1900s, the party primary, is being circumvented by party leaders," said Bob Loevy, a political science professor at Colorado College. "It is so clear in this case... that this is really being set up in Washington."
