Gene Kloss specialized in intaglio prints. Intaglio - which comes from the Italian word for "cut" - was invented in the 15th century.

An image is made directly - usually etched with acid - on a metal plate. (Kloss preferred copper.)

Ink is applied to the plate, and then wiped off, so that it remains only in the etched (or engraved) recesses.
