In their quest for perfect feet, American women are passing on the pedicure and going straight to the scalpel.

The number of foot surgeries performed for purely cosmetic purposes is on the rise.

Dr. Stuart J. Mogul, a New York foot and ankle surgeon, now specializes in toe-straightening and toe-shortening procedures for women who think their toes look ugly when exposed in strappy sandals.

"We live and work in an area where fashion and walking on pavement kind of converge," said Mogul, whose office is in Manhattan. "Four years ago I wasn't doing any cosmetic work. My practice has kind of carved ...
