The paintings of Pierre Bonnard have never lacked admirers.
After viewing a 1930 exhibition of Bonnard's paintings, his friend
and colleague Henri Matisse told collector Duncan Phillips, "Bonnard
is the greatest among us."
Critics fell over themselves praising his work, comparing him not
just to Matisse and Claude Renoir but to novelist Marcel Proust and
