Colorado Springs is growing so rapidly that it's difficult to imagine it ever having hard times surviving as a city. But without the influence of a small town to the west, Colorado Springs might not have thrived.

It was the 1890 gold rush in Cripple Creek that revitalized the entire area, bringing in prospectors and tourists and new residents daily.

Bob Womack was the first man to find gold in the valley of Cripple Creek. In the next 10 years, the area boomed, growing from a population of 15 to more than 10,000.

The gold in Cripple Creek did more than aid the fledgling communities of Colorado ...
