Hugh Whittington; Government Filmmaker

Hugh Gorman Whittington, 78, a government and freelance filmmaker who retired in 1993 as a civilian director and scriptwriter for the Naval Imaging Command, which handles many audiovisual duties, died March 25 at Sibley Memorial Hospital of complications from pneumonia.

Mr. Whittington, a Washington resident, worked for the U.S. Information Agency from 1949 to 1962 and was a project supervisor on many contract productions. He wrote scripts for such films as "In Search of Lincoln" and "Winterthur -- Adventure in the Past."

He was a recipient of the USIA Meritorious Service Award.
