SCOTLAND'S once-proud fishing fleet has seen more than 1,000 of its boats scrapped since devolution.

The staggering toll on the industry of years of savage quota cuts presided over by Environment Minister Ross Finnie emerged yesterday.

The revelation last night sparked claims that Mr Finnie had overseen the 'wanton destruction' of the industry and prompted calls for ministers to fight harder to preserve what is left of the fleet.

The scale of the cuts means the Scottish fleet has shrunk by about a third since 1999, the year Mr Finnie took over responsibility for fisheries.
