Hole in the ozone layer is mending itself (but slowly)

THE Earth's damaged ozone layer is repairing itself, environmental experts said yesterday. But the recovery is taking longer than expected, they warned.

The layer blocks harmful solar radiation. But holes have appeared in it caused by manmade chlorofluorocarbons chemicals used in aerosol sprays and cooling equipment such as fridges.

The damage has been blamed for increased risk of skin cancer and cataracts.

It may also harm crop yields and sea life, according to researchers.
