A BRITISH soldier killed in Afghanistan hoped to use his background as a British Muslim to foster greater understanding in the Army, his family have said.

Lance Corporal Jabron Hashmi, 24, from Birmingham, died together with Corporal Peter Thorpe, 27, of the Royal Signals, from Barrow-in- Furness, Cumbria.

In a statement, L/Cpl Hashmi's family said it had been his lifelong dream to join the British Army.
