Pounds 2,000 fines if shopkeepers use imperial weights alongside metric

SHOPKEEPERS could be fined Pounds 2,000 or jailed if they display imperial measures from 2010.

The EU says that traders will not be allowed to mark goods in pounds and ounces, alongside kilos and grams, after December 31, 2009.

But a group that campaigns to protect imperial measures yesterday branded the Brussels directive a 'malicious attack on our democracy'.

Although shops must sell goods in grams and kilograms, they can still use imperial measures in parallel by displaying ' supplementary indications' on labels.
