Abbey's army of small shareholders is being advised to sell shares in the bank whether or not it is taken over by Spain's Banco Santander.

Leading stockbrokers believe that most of the 1.8 million small shareholders, many of whom have hung on to their holdings in the bank since it converted from a building society in 1989, would be better off selling their shares now and taking the cash.
