Roman road is discovered on East End estate

BARELY a metre below ground, in the shadow of crumbling tower blocks and Victorian terraced streets, lies one of the most exiting archaeological discoveries in London of recent years.

On a rundown estate archeologists have come across a Roman road preserved in pristine condition.

The 2,000-year-old road once ran from Great Dunmow in Essex to Clapton, across the River Lea. Its compacted gravel surface would have rattled with carts carrying fresh produce to market and on to the great Roman city of Londinium.
