THE NHS carries out 150 lung transplants a year. Here, Catherine Aitchison, 53, who lives with her teenage daughter in Edinburgh, tells ANGELA BROOKS about her double lung transplant, and her surgeon explains the operation.

THE PATIENT

WHEN I was in my 30s, doctors found I had an inherited disorder known as Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. I was suffering from constant chest infections, even though I smoked only a couple of cigarettes a day.
