The space shuttle Columbia broke apart in space 15 minutes before
it was to land on Saturday. The seven astronauts aboard the shuttle
all died.
The shuttle was streaking through the sky over Texas at about
12,500 miles per hour (that's 18 times the speed of sound). It was
almost 39 miles above Earth when scientists and controllers on the
ground lost contact with the shuttle and its crew.
We don't know what caused the accident, but President Bush has
said that the U.S. government will find out and fix the problem. "Our
journey into space will go on," he said.
