How traditional teaching really pays in later life

CHILDREN taught English using traditional methods go on to earn up to Pounds 5,500 extra over their lifetime, a study has found.

Researchers assessed the effects of the National Literacy Project, in which teachers focused on grammar and punctuation as well as using triedandtested methods such as 'phonics', in which children learn the sounds of the alphabet.

Carried out from 1996 to 1998 in junior schools where pupils scored below national averages for reading, it came in response to concerns children were being allowed too much 'free reading', with little or no guidance.
