NO doubt many of your readers will have savoured David Dimbleby's testament to Great Expectations on a recent edition of BBC2's The Big Read.

What they may not appreciate is that the atmospheric backdrop for Dickens's epic work could soon be lost forever.

Much of the Hoo peninsula in north Kent is threatened by proposals for a new airport twice the size of Heathrow. This includes Cooling churchyard - the setting for Pip's scary first encounter with the convict, Magwitch.
