PLAYING the fool has been good for Ardal O'Hanlon.

In 1994 the Irish comedian's wide-eyed, innocent stand-up persona won him a Best Newcomer gong at the Hackney Empire comedy awards.

Then came Dougal, the childlike, eejit priest he played in Channel 4's superlative Father Ted. It was a gift of a part which led, in turn, to his role as the gormless, otherworldly superhero Thermoman in the less-wonderful but longer-running (and more lucrative) BBC sitcom, My Hero.

Now the 37-year-old from Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, is to make his West End acting debut in See You Next Tuesday, Ronald ...
