New Order, Spinning Out of Control

After singer Ian Curtis hanged himself, the remaining three members of Joy Division unenthusiastically drew straws to determine who would serve as the group's new frontman. Soon renamed New Order, the band from Manchester, England, embarked on an often-inscrutable musical voyage marked by that same sort of arbitrary decision- making. Yet somehow, despite its stubborn disdain for the expectations of friends and fans, New Order picked up where Joy Division left off, attaining international success and a creative legacy that the earlier band barely hinted at.
