ISRAEL began work yesterday on a 215-mile wall along the border with the West Bank which it hopes will keep out the suicide bombers.

Bulldozers began work on a 70-mile section from the northern village of Salem to a point north-east of Tel Aviv.

The wall will roughly follow the Green Line marking Israel's old border before its seizure of the West Bank in 1967.

Salem is close to Jenin, the town from which dozens of Palestinian suicide bombers have set out to attack Israeli targets in the past 18 months.
