Thomas James (1946-1974) published one collection of poems in his lifetime. Letters to a Stranger (1973) is a book of dark intensities and deeply felt connections, both haunted and haunting, at once brooding, sensual and lucid. Its poems are shapely and well fashioned, as if the poet had tested his demons by submitting them to the rigors of a formal control. These lyrics are strikingly pitched and modulated to the specifically human registers of a single speaking voice, perhaps because, as Miguel Hernandez once suggested, "the poet creates in trance as an angel, in moments of crisis as a man."
