BRITISH actress Minnie Driver was a very noticeable presence in the bar of the Four Seasons hotel, Beverly Hills, on a midweek evening last autumn. A less discreet place to conduct a business meeting in Tinseltown you could not choose. But Ms Driver was in full flow, a film producer transfixed by her unblinking eye contact as she delivered her 'pitch' with an intensity normally reserved for deathbed scenes.

'I want to really develop this project,' she stated, giving the man her most devastating give-me-the-part smile. 'I think this could be really exciting.'
