More than 5,000 Long Island Power Authority customers were facing
the mammoth heat wave without air conditioners or fans Wednesday
afternoon.
LIPA reported that some 5,500 customers were without power at 3
p.m. Wednesday - but otherwise, the power authority's system was
holding steady, even as usage records fall in direct correlation to
the rising mercury.
