Commentary: My personal Declaration of Independence
|
More than 20 million persons were taken from Africa between 1500
and 1800 and brought to America to be slaves. When the Declaration
of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776, it did not give freedom
to these slaves. Neither did the signing of the Declaration of
Independence give immediate freedom from English lordship, or
equality for women in our country. Americans had to fight for their
freedom then and are still fighting for our freedom today.
