Keeping the aircraft carrier fleet afloat

THE AIRCRAFT carrier has been the symbol of American naval power since World War II. Today's fleet of 11 supercarriers remains the backbone of the US Navy. Aircraft carriers are deployed in the Arabian Gulf, the Yellow Sea, and the Pacific Ocean. In the coming weeks, as the Obama administration completes a comprehensive review of defense programs, a key question will be the proper size of that fleet.
