BORN on a Cotswold farm, Thomas Dover was one of eight children of a cavalier soldier who fought alongside Prince Rupert during the Civil War.

After studying medicine at Oxford, the young man served an apprenticeship under the famous Dr Sydenham, who saved his life with a radical treatment after he had contracted smallpox.

After marrying and inheriting the family farm, Dover moved to Bristol where, in 1695, he was one of the first physicians to offer his services free of charge to the poor of St Peter's Hospital.
