I've been reading a wonderful book called Extraordinary Popular
Delusions and the Madness of Crowds. It was written in 1841 by
Charles Mackay and is a delightful romp through human folly. It
proves yet again that there is absolutely nothing foolish done today
that has not already been thought of in the past. My favourite
relates to an early 18th-century financial disaster known as 'The
South Sea Bubble', when people bought speculative shares in
companies in the hopes of earning great fortunes. So insane was
