Crossing over from a guard to a friend

Whether she helped them cross the street last fall or 30 years
ago, crossing guard Maureen Cahoon always remembers her students'
names. Tuesday was no different, as she stood watch outside Newton's
Mason-Rice Elementary for the first day of school.
It is magical, she says, how she recalls the names all the
children she's escorted.
And it's not only the children's names she knows, she also knows
the parents, the grandparents, and even pets' names.
"It's very important you know what the dog's name is," she said.
