Dickens made his mark on doulton ware

W hen the Doulton & Watts pottery began in 1815, the Battle of Waterloo was raging, but this didn't deter John Doulton (1794-1873) who established a business that is a household name today.

His second son Henry (1820-1897) took over the pottery on the death of his father and was the first potter to be knighted, in 1882. He was also awarded the Albert Medal for services to the industry.

The company began by making all types of pottery, including ceramic beer bottles for Whitbread where, coincidentally, a young Charles Dickens (1812-1870) earned pin money by sticking on labels. Whether this was ...
