Decommissioned figureheads go on show ; Historic works of art from a bygone era of the Royal Navy are now on display for visitors to view.

Historic works of art from a bygone era of the Royal Navy are now on display for visitors to view.

The colourful Royal Navy figureheads, taken from decommissioned Devonport-based wooden frigates and other vessels, have been put on public show.

The figureheads, which were once fixed to the front of wooden naval vessels, are housed in the historic Tarred Yarn Store in the South Yard.

David Sugden, assistant manager of the heritage site, described the figureheads as being "fascinating" and said that they generate a great deal of conversation.

"They are works of art," he said.
