How a helpless nation watched as the crew of the sunken submarine thetis died months before the outbreak of the second world war

I Was 17 in 1939 and, in a diary I kept for that year, an entry
reads: "Thursday, June 1, was on the wireless news tonight that a
Royal Navy submarine is missing.
"The new vessel, HMS Thetis, with over 100 men on board has been
going through underwater trials and it is now some hours overdue in
resurfacing and reporting her position. We have been told that a
full-scale search has begun."
When I wrote that, I little thought that a nationwide mourning
was about to begin for a tragedy that only the start of the Second
World War, three months later, would surpass.
