Why is Ava more popular than Elizabeth? Why has Jacob buried the oncemighty William?

Parents often try to come up with uncommon names, experts say, but cultural influences have a strong, sometimes subliminal pull.

It turns out that social scientists know an awful lot about baby names because they use them to study changes in tastes and popularity.

Some European countries have fairly complete records going back to the 16th century. In this country, complete nationwide data goes back to the 1880s.
