"Digging is definitely my favourite Heaney poem; it opens --
'Between my finger and my thumb/The squat pen rests; as snug as a
gun'. I relate to it because it's a writer's poem, about Heaney
admiring his father and grandfather's work on the land, but moving
beyond it.
That pen is Seamus Heaney's tool or maybe weapon of choice. I
also knew early that I wanted to write, producing poems about
everyday life as a child.
I studied the poem for 'O' level. We learned a lot about Heaney
