In Peary's footsteps: Tracing explorer's journey to High Arctic
|
One hundred years ago, Robert Edwin Peary sailed north to the
Arctic aboard the Roosevelt. The ship transported support crew,
supplies and dog-sled teams for Peary's expedition to the North
Pole.
Peary reached the North Pole on April 6, 1909, and that historic
day filled my mind as I paced the bow of our ship, the Kapitan
Khlebnikov. Our goal was the same as the Roosevelt's, to sail to the
edge of the pack ice that surrounds the North Pole.
As our ship approached the northern end of Ellesmere Island where
Peary had launched his sleds, an arctic blizzard nipped at our
