The 'bling' capital of the world - Charlotte Amalie

St. Thomas was discovered by Columbus, and later became the possession of the Danish West India Company. In 1917, the U.S. bought St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix and various small islets and grouped them into what is called the United States Virgin Islands.

The Danes founded the town of Charlotte Amalie, the arrival point for most visitors to St. Thomas. In 1724 it became a free port where goods were exempt from duties and regulations. The laid-back atmosphere made it a favorite among pirates, including Captain Kidd and the infamous Blackbeard, whose castle is now a museum.
