Couple collects laptops for rural African community

Gil and Karen Gleason want the old laptop you have that's boxed up in a home office, collecting dust.

They're not going to use it, but people will in the Ugandan village of Kitojo, where villagers need technological improvements for health care, education and economic development.

The laptops don't need to be fancy, the Orinda couple said. The computers just need to be working, running Windows 2000 or XP operating systems, and contain a copy of Microsoft Office.

The Gleasons and six others, who left for Uganda Feb. 1, said the donated laptops help the people of Kitojo develop record-keeping ...
