They are not the prettiest of plants, but then MARY LOVELL- SMITH 's liking for mangroves is not based on aesthetics. ---------- ----------

They've a stylie bridge, dazzling social lives and a cosy clime. However, one of the few things Aucklanders have that I envy, unappreciative of them though they tend to be, are mangroves and the mudlands they inhabit.

The inner reaches of those northern estuaries and harbours - the Hokianga, Whangaruru, Kaipara, Manukau and their ilk - are mysterious and sultry homes to the mangrove.
