Scunthorpe may have escaped the worst of the cuts but Corus's decision to axe 3,500 jobs in Britain and Europe has been greeted with dismay in the town.

In a bid to cut costs by a further pounds200-million a year, the Indian-owned company yesterday confirmed plans to axe 10 per cent of its workforce.

Ninety-three of those losses will come in Scunthorpe and it is understood the town escaped bigger cuts because the products it produces are very diverse.

Work will be brought in to town from the Rotherham site, which will also help save jobs, and the Scunthorpe works is also more technologically ...
