Along with Andy Warhol, his almost exact contemporary, Joseph Beuys was probably the most important artist of the late 20th century. Both were hyper-prolific, one-man art-factories - as well as supreme self-promoters - from the 1950s until their deaths in the mid-1980s. Yet, while the silkscreens of Marilyn Monroe and soup cans spring to mind as soon as one thinks of Warhol, it's the image of Beuys himself (in his distinctive felt-hat and fishing jacket) that pops up, whenever one thinks of Beuys.
