Kent leaves baseball proud of the fire he brought

An emotional Jeff Kent stood in front of a blue background at Dodger Stadium and announced his retirement Thursday. He didn't proclaim his intention to enter the Hall of Fame as a Giant, though.

Even for Kent, some actions are just too bold. An All-Star second baseman and 2000 National League Most Valuable Player, Kent stepped away after a 17-year career in which he took equally blunt swings at fastballs and his critics.

But the mustachioed son of a beat cop couldn't reflect on his baseball life without frequent pauses to wipe his eyes and collect himself during a lengthy news conference.
