Building a Library: The Fall of Rome

As a boy I was fascinated by those maps in historical atlases
showing the chaos which engulfed fifth-century Europe with the fall
of Rome. Great colour-coded arrows arcing out of the vast emptiness
of Central Asia marked the progress of those outlandish barbarian
tribes: the Vandals, the Alans, the Goths, and Attila and his Huns.
Setting out to write an historical trilogy about the period, I
found that historians knew far less about the fifth century than such
maps suggest. It was chaos; and chaos is difficult to unravel,
