more likely to grasp the imagination. It was no accident that George
Orwell cast pigs as the rulers of his farmyard. At one level, Animal
Farm is a powerful political tract and a scathing satire on human
folly, but it is also, and just as profoundly, a very effective fable
in the Aesop tradition: the story of a dictatorial Berkshire boar
named Napoleon who rose up on his own hind legs, squeaking: 'Four
legs good, Two legs bad!"...
