A Tired old French clock covered in cobwebs and discovered in
Staffordshire will be entered into our antiques auction next month.
The clock is cased in what is termed Boulle work, named after a
famous French cabinetmaker called Andre Charles Boulle, who died in
1732.
Boulle was prominent in the fashion of inlay or marquetry and
invented the technique of inlaying brass with tortoiseshell on to
furniture and clocks.
Such new veneer techniques were popular and Boulle, based in
Paris, was commissioned by the French king, Louis XIV, to furnish
his palaces.
